Advice on taking indoor shots of people , please. iPhone XR

Oh Hey, maybe I should have posted here instead.
Journalism student using iPhone XR for photo/ video projects.
Any tips, especially for making people look less ghoulish in interior shots? Should I handle that in editing afterwards?
(and yeah, all I've got is this iPhone for now, scrimping and all for my tuition etc)

Just the basics go a long way. For day time, shoot with your subject standing in front of a natural light source. You can do this by setting up between the person your taking a shot of and a window so that the light hits them. Oh and make good use of the focus on facial features or whatever it is you happen to be highlighting.
