Hi! I've been using zoom lenses in my sports (mostly the grandkids' soccer games), but I'd like to venture into nature photography. Should I get a prime lens, or would my existing collection (12-100, 100-300) be good enough?
A lot depends on the type of nature and how close you are to your subject. I do use a 400mm prime lens a lot for wildlife photography, but when I was whale watching I found it to be too restrictive. The 100-400mm zoom was much easier to use and capture my subjects as the distance between me and my subject was constantly changing. (I don't own the 100-400, I hired it. Seriously thinking about buying it though)
My advice would be to go out there and try them. See how you feel. A love street photography but I don't shoot with the typical 35mm-50mm lens I often have a 135mm or 70-200mm. Just feel right for me. Id agree with Tammy saying a zoom might suit when shooting something unpredictable.
i use zoom lenses. it's too hard to change lenses on the fly for nature photography. my go to nature lens is the canon 100-400 with the canon 7d mk2, but I will also keep a 6d nearby with the 70-200mm on it ready to go.
